Ayushmann Khurrana ‘never wanted to become a typical commercial actor’

TAP | Updated: May 9, 2017

Mumbai, May 09: Ayushmann Khurrana made his debut in Bollywood with Vicky Donor and also starred in unconventional films such as Vicky Donor and Dum Laga Ke Haisha, and the actor believes that his choice of roles has paid off for him.
Ayushmann, although, hasn’t featured in commercial films as such, but the actor doesn’t regret it. “I never wanted to become a typical commercial actor. I would prefer to do something that is off-centre and different and these are the kind of films that have worked for me. Be it Vicky Donor or Dum Laga Ke Haisha. I want to own this space,” Ayushmann said.
In his career spanning over five years, the 32-year-old actor has established himself in the film industry while two of his films have also won National Film Awards. Ayushmann is now gearing up for Meri Pyaari Bindu, a quirky love story. The film, which also stars Parineeti Chopra, will release on May 12. It has been directed by newcomer Akshay Roy and is Ayushmann’s third collaboration with Yash Raj Films. “The movie was narrated to me two years ago and then I had forgotten about it. I came to know that Yash Raj was producing and I got very excited. Pari was already on board. I am glad that the film got made. It is a very nostalgic film,” Ayushmann said.
The film marks Parineeti’s return to the screen after a gap of three years. This, incidentally, is also Ayushmann’s first film in two years and the actor said that Meri Pyaari Bindu is important for both of them.
“Parineeti has gone through the whole body transformation and is coming back on screen after three years. I am also coming back on screen after two years. This film is important for both of us. I am glad that the trailers have been received well,” he said.
Ayushmann’s break, however, was not deliberate as he was busy shooting his other projects such as Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Savdhan, apart from Meri Pyaari Bindu.
“The break was not deliberate. I was waiting for the right script. And then Manmarziyan did not happen. I am glad that I am coming out with three films this year. It would compensate for my absence in the last two years,” he said.
Ayushmann, meanwhile, also spoke about his other films - Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Savdhan. “I am fortunate that I got to work with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari in Bareilly Ki Barfi. There are two great actors with me - Kriti Sanon and Rajkummar Rao. It is a very quirky story,” he said.
Ayushmann, in fact, recently wrapped Shubh Mangal Savdhan with Bhumi Pednekar. The film has been produced by Aanand L Rai. “Both of these films are very special to me,” he said. PTI
