ITANAGAR, May 11: As an encouragement towards sporting activities, Governor P B Acharya has initiated the governor’s award for excellence in games and sports.
This was informed by the governor when parliamentary secretary for sports and youth affairs Nyamar Karbak called on the former to brief him on the ensuing Hangpan Dada Memorial Football and Volley Trophy at Raj Bhavan here on Thursday.
An amount of Rs 01 lakh will be kept in the fixed deposit from Governor’s Discretionary Grant as corpus fund for the purpose. The interest accrued each year will be used for the awards, which will be in kind. There will be three awards each for men and women. A certificate for each award winner will be given from Raj Bhavan.
The governor appreciated the endeavor of the department of sports and youth affairs and Karbak for organizing the Hangpan Dada Memorial Football and Volley Trophy tournament and while regretting his inability to participate in the proposed mega event of the tournament on May 16 next due to prior engagements, Acharya conveyed his good wishes to the organizers and participants for the success of tournament.
Earlier, the parliamentary secretary informed that after renaming the Chief Minister’s Trophy (Football and Volley) as Hangpan Dada Memorial Football and Volley Trophy, the department of sports and youth affairs is conducting the tournament across state starting from block level to the district level.
More than one lakh youths across state are participating in the tournament, he added.
