ITANAGAR, May 23: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has resolved to organise a consultative meeting on the issue of citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees at Banquet Hall here on May 27.
The students’ body has reiterated its opposition to the Centre’s move to grant the refugees citizensip.
All former presidents, general secretaries, leaders and federal members of AAPSU, community-based students’ organisations, NGOs, etc., would be invited to give their opinion on the issue towards drawing up a roadmap to fight for the cause of the indigenous people.
AAPSU’s decision to hold such meeting follows the decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to grant citizenship to Chakma-Hajong refugees.
“We find this development an insult to the indigenous people of state. AAPSU’s stand on the issue has been very clear from day one; we will not allow anyone to undermine our aspiration,” the union’s president Hawa Bagang said while addressing AAPSU’s executive meeting on Tuesday.
The union’s general secretary Tobom Dai chaired the meeting.
Meanwhile, in an effort to give more impetus to the ongoing fight against Chakma and Hajong refugees, former AAPSU president Takam Tatun handed over to Bagang important documents, CDs and other relevant papers of the High Power Committee led by former chairman Shambhu Singh, joint secretary (North East) in MHA.
NESO Organising Secretary Marge Riba and other central executive members of AAPSU were present in the meeting which also saw the union felicitate its vice president (protocol) Tayuk Sonam for being awarded PhD degree by RGU, Doimukh.
