NAHARLAGUN, May 27: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Saturday acknowledged the supreme sacrifice of Havildar Hangpan Dada for the cause of the nation.
“I salute the great soul of Ashok Chakra Awardee Havildar Hangpan Dada as he sacrificed his life for our tomorrow,” Mein said while attending the closing ceremony of the state-level Hangpan Dada Memorial Football and Volleyball Tournament as the chief guest at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here, a report from the PRO said.
While lauding Chief Minister Pema Khandu for renaming the erstwhile Chief Minister Football and Volleyball Trophy as Hangpan Dada Memorial Football and Volleyball Trophy, Mein said that the trophy was a tribute to the great soul for his supreme sacrifice.
“Dada will be remembered for years to come as an inspiration for the youths for his unparalleled sacrifice and bravado,” the deputy chief minister said.
He added that the state government was committed to developing games and sports along with other sectors in the state.
He offered floral tribute to martyr Hangpan Dada before the start of the final football match (men) and prayed for the eternal peace of his soul. Upper Subansiri beat East Kameng district 3-0 to win the men’s soccer final.
Parliamentary Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs Nyamar Karbak said that more than two lakh youths from 21 districts including Capital Complex participated in the month-long tournament.
He also said that the state government would come up with a Sports Policy soon to streamline and promote games and sports and make them a source of income for the youth of the state.
Among others, Home Minister Kumar Waii, parliamentary secretaries Chow Zingnu Namchoom (Planning) and Karya Bagang (Textiles and Handicrafts), MLA Dikto Yikar, Chairman, Sports Authority of Arunachal Pradesh Bamang Tago, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Dani Salu were present on the occasion.
The dignitaries gave away the trophies and prizes to the winners of football (men and women) and volleyball (men and women) and the best players in each category of the tournament.
The winning teams received a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh in football (men & women) while runner up teams received Rs 3 lakh.
In volley ball, winning teams and the runner up teams received a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively in both the categories while the best players got a cash prize of Rs 10,000/- each, the report added.
