14 dead, 28 injured after truck runs off road and falls into canal in UP’s Etah

ETAH, May 05: Fourteen people were killed and at least 28 injured after a truck drove into a roadside canal early on Friday morning in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district.
The accident occurred between 3:30 and 4 am when the truck, carrying a wedding party, was returning from Nagla Lal Singh in Jalesar area of Etah district. All passengers were from Nagaria village, Shamshabad, in Agra district.
The mishap took place near Sarai Neem in Jalesar area of Etah district.
Senior superintendent of police Satyarth Anirudh Pankaj confirmed the death toll and said it was yet unknown what caused the accident. The truck had broken through the roadside railing and fallen into the shallow drain which had about 2 feet of water.
The Etah district magistrate also arrived at the spot.
The injured have been taken to SN Hospital in Agra and the Etah district hospital.
Preliminary investigation indicate that the driver, who is among the deceased, might have fallen asleep while driving since there were no signs of a collision nor was any vehicle nearby. PTI
